The Routine.
The easy step-by-step guide to the routine — choose the chew, set the place, lead the routine, and let your dog learn the art of chewing with purpose.
Choose the Right Chew
Start with one of the easier, less dense chews in your box. These are the “warm-up” chews — highly desirable, flavorful, and simple for most dogs to chomp, crunch, and enjoy.
Send Your Dog to Their Place
Offer the chew only in a structured location, such as a crate, kennel, or designated dog bed. This gives your dog a safe space and teaches them that chewing has rules.
You Give. You Lead.
Do not just toss the chew on the floor. You choose the chew, you choose the place, and you choose when the session begins. This keeps you in the leadership role and helps prevent possessiveness or conflict with other dogs.
Let Them Figure It Out
Some dogs chew immediately. Others need to learn. If your dog is unsure, give them time. For harder chews, you may add a small amount of duck fat, coconut oil, or peanut butter to spark interest.
Make It a Timed Routine
Start with about 10 to 15 minutes. During that time, the chew is available. When time is up, the chew goes away. This teaches your dog that chewing is a valuable, focused event — not an all-day free-for-all.
Build Toward Deeper Chewing
Once your dog understands the routine, begin offering moderate and denser chews. These require more effort and help create the deep, focused chewing that supports enrichment, satisfaction, jaw work, and calm decompression.
