Our Story

Why Gnaw & Order Exists.

Built from nearly 30 years of experience with dogs.
Shaped by more than 3,500 supervised chewing sessions.

Jennifer Broome has spent nearly three decades listening to dogs.

Not simply training them, but watching how they move, rest, communicate, cope with stress, seek satisfaction, and tell us what they need—often without making a sound.

Long before Gnaw & Order existed, Jennifer saw the value of purposeful chewing within her own pack. For more than 20 years, carefully selected raw bones and natural chewing were part of the way she cared for and fed her dogs.

She saw that chewing was about far more than keeping a dog occupied.

It engaged the mind. Exercised the jaw. Provided an appropriate outlet for instinct. Helped create satisfaction and encouraged dogs to settle afterward.

But bringing that experience into a professional kennel environment presented a much larger challenge.

The Beginning

The Problem Jennifer Could Not Ignore

Jennifer founded QK Dogs more than 26 years ago with the belief that dogs in her care deserved far more than food, shelter, and a place to sleep.

Boarding dogs needed structure, movement, rest, human interaction, and meaningful enrichment.

Chewing could provide that enrichment—but safety came first.

Clients could not simply leave personal toys, bones, and chews with their dogs. Unsupervised products could break apart, become choking hazards, damage teeth, or be swallowed.

The products commonly available at the time were not convincing alternatives. There were hard plastic bones many dogs ignored, rubber toys that failed to hold their interest, processed rawhide, cooked and smoked bones, and products that could be harder than a dog’s teeth.

Jennifer knew dogs needed to chew.

Owners simply lacked a safer, more thoughtful way to meet that need.

Tested in the Real World

From Experience to an 18-Month Pilot Program

As a new generation of responsibly sourced natural chews became available, Jennifer began evaluating them at QK Dogs.

She did not choose products because their packaging was attractive or because they were popular online.

She watched the dogs.

For 18 months, Jennifer and the QK Dogs team introduced carefully selected products through supervised, structured chewing sessions. They recorded more than 3,500 individual sessions involving dogs of different breeds, ages, sizes, temperaments, and chewing styles.

They observed:
Which products immediately engaged dogs
Which products dogs ignored
How chewing styles differed
How long sessions should last
When a product was too easy or too challenging
How dogs progressed through different chewing experiences
How they behaved and rested after a satisfying session

This was not a laboratory study. It was something equally important to Jennifer: extensive, structured observation of real dogs in a professional care environment.

The dogs revealed what worked.

What the Sessions Taught Us

The Most Important Discovery

The success of chewing enrichment was not based on the chew alone.

It depended on selecting an appropriate product, introducing it correctly, supervising the dog, setting a reasonable session length, and creating a consistent routine.

Jennifer also heard the same frustrations repeatedly from dog owners:

“What is safe?”
“Why does my dog ignore everything I buy?”
“How long should I let my dog chew?”
“How do I know when to take it away?”
“Which product is right for my dog?”

People did not need another box filled with random dog products.

They needed education, guidance, progression, and a system they could trust.

That system became Gnaw & Order.

The System

More Than a Box of Chews

Gnaw & Order was created to help owners transform chewing from an occasional treat into a purposeful enrichment routine.

Each collection is informed by Jennifer’s decades of professional experience and the lessons gathered through thousands of supervised sessions at QK Dogs.

The goal is not simply to keep dogs busy. It is to help owners provide an appropriate outlet for instinct, create predictable moments of satisfaction, and better understand the individual dog in front of them.

The Founder

Meet Jennifer Broome

Jennifer Broome is the founder of Gnaw & Order and QK Dogs, a professional dog trainer, author, sporting-dog handler, competitor, and lifelong student of canine behavior.

She dreamed of creating QK Dogs and built it from the ground up more than 26 years ago. Since then, she has worked with thousands of dogs and their families, developed nationally recognized dogs in the field and show ring, and built a career around helping dogs and people communicate more clearly.

Her work also extends through Artistry Afield, where her love of dogs, sporting traditions, conservation, travel, and the outdoors come together.

Gnaw & Order is the next chapter in that lifetime of work. It combines what Jennifer learned from her own dogs, what she witnessed through decades of professional care, what thousands of recorded sessions revealed, and what dog owners told her they desperately needed.
