Busy, growing, or teething puppies may benefit from two or three shorter
sessions. Chewing sessions work well after exercise, training, travel, busy
household activity, or before the evening wind-down.
Edible chews also contain calories, so consider them as part of your
dog’s daily food intake.
Some dogs immediately enjoy softer chews but need time to learn how to
work denser textures. Dense chewing requires effort, patience, and practice.
Try:
Offer it for 10–15 minutes, then remove it and try again another day.
Avoid immediately replacing every challenging chew with an easier one.
Learning to work a dense chew is part of the enrichment.
Store unused chews in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, heat, moisture, pets, and insects.
After a chewing session:
Do not seal a damp chew inside an airtight plastic bag because trapped moisture may cause mold.
Chews may also be refrigerated or frozen for longer storage. They do not need to be completely defrosted before being offered, although they should still be inspected and appropriate for your dog.
Fur is a natural part of certain animal-based chews. Many dogs enjoy the smell, texture, and tearing experience it provides.
Fur also adds natural roughage and variety to the chewing ritual. It should be viewed as enrichment—not as a replacement for veterinary parasite prevention or treatment.
Chews are high-value possessions. Some dogs may stiffen, growl, eat faster, hover over the chew, or challenge anyone who approaches.
Give the chew in a quiet, secure space away from children and other
animals. Do not suddenly grab it, corner the dog, or create a confrontation.
A dog should learn to release possessions when instructed, but this must be taught safely through leash work, structure, and leadership. If your dog growls, snaps, or bites, stop offering the chew and seek help from an experienced dog-training professional.
Dogs that are new to natural chews or unfamiliar proteins may eat too quickly or experience temporary digestive upset.
Introduce one new item at a time and begin with a short session. Stop offering the chew if vomiting, diarrhea, discomfort, or loss of appetite occurs.
Contact your veterinarian if symptoms are severe, continue, include blood, or if you believe your dog swallowed a large piece.
A small amount of mild gum bleeding may occur when a dog begins working their gums and chewing through tartar buildup. This may be part of improving gum stimulation and oral health.
However, stop the session and inspect your dog’s mouth if the bleeding is more than slight, continues after the session, happens repeatedly, or appears to come from a cracked tooth, wound, or painful area.
Dogs with dental disease, broken teeth, loose teeth, or significant gum problems should be evaluated by a veterinarian before using dense chews.
